Skin laxity and the ‘droopy’ effect around the jaw and the chin area are usually associated with the ageing process or with being overweight. It could also be sun exposure that causes the ‘turkey neck’ and double chin effect, and sometimes it might just be your genetic make-up. For many, this is something that concerns them greatly and they look for ways to disguise their necks. The problem is that a double chin is very hard to hide, and this part of your body acts as a frame for the face. As a result, having a layer of fat here can be very disconcerting.

It’s possible to remove fat from many parts of the body through diet and exercise but this is difficult with the chin.

Up until recently, the only way to address a double chin was through liposuction or through a chin lift with liposuction. The procedure has been perfected over the years, but still requires an Anaesthetic. A chin-strap or pressure garment also needs to be worn for an extended period of time afterwards (making it obvious you’ve had a procedure).  And because all surgery is serious, some people have put off having their necks refined through surgical means.

Nowadays, however, there are many new procedures on the market-place that offer non-surgical, non-invasive solutions to getting rid of a double chin, and these are being eagerly embraced.

Here are 7 non-surgical methods for reducing double chins – that are being used across the world today.

  1. Fat Dissolving injections (Different brand names in Australia and USA – Kybella and Belkyra)

The procedure involves injecting an acidic substance, which dissolves fat cells, in a targeted area below the chin. The physician will draw a grid of dots on the area where the most fat is present and will administer an injection into each delineated site. Sometimes the number of small injections can be up to 50 at one session! The number of treatments required varies from patient to patient, but usually between 3 and 6 are necessary (a month to 6 weeks apart). The fat that breaks down under the chin will be reabsorbed into the body, with no side-effects. Once the fat cells are destroyed, they typically won’t return.

After a treatment, there can be some swelling, redness, and sometimes numbness. Most people start to notice a positive change after a few weeks, or after 2 – 3 treatments. Fat Dissolving injections and have been used widely only since April 2015, but it has become extremely popular. The Fat Dissolving Injections Sydney therapy is best for the person who has only mild or moderate fat under the chin.

  1. Freezing the Chin Fat  with Cryolipolysis

There are procedures available that freeze the fatty tissues under the skin, which promise a 20 – 25% reduction in fat thickness. No needles are required. Results are usually seen within 1 or 2 visits (with the 2nd treatment recommended about 4 to 6 weeks after the first treatment). The temperatures are carefully controlled to target the fat cells, which are crystallised and destroyed. The fat cells are likely to then be eliminated naturally from your body over a period of time.  There may be some discomfort while the fat is frozen (the skin will be drawn up between 2 panels) and then massaged.

In the case of double chins, a smaller applicator is used – it’s called a ‘mini.’ It is suggested that the best age for this process is a person under 55 years, where the patient has fairly good skin tightness. The treatment usually lasts for an hour, but you can walk out and carry on with your day afterwards. Once the fat cells are eradicated, they cannot grow back.

  1. The Anti-Wrinkle Injections Neck Lift

The popular injectables for fighting wrinkles have been very popular for many years to slow ageing, but it’s now also being used as a non-surgical neck lift and double chin treatment. By injecting small amounts of the muscle-relaxing substance into the problem area of the neck and chin, it’s possible to reduce hanging neck bands very effectively. The treatment involves injections with very fine needles (sometimes a local anaesthetic can be administered) and takes about an hour. The results are best on those who have minimal sagging, and an improvement can be seen after as little as two days. Treatments are temporary have a shelf life, and need to be repeated after 4 to 6 months if you want to continue the positive effect.

  1. Ulthera or Ultherapy

Ulthera is an ultrasound-based treatment. It involves heating underlying tissue and stimulating collagen. The ultrasound stimulates the body’s own regenerative abilities by penetrating deep into the layers of the skin structure so that sagging skin can be lifted and tightened from the inside out.

The procedure involves having gel applied to the treatment area, and then an ultrasound wand will be moved over the skin. You will feel intermittent bursts of heat that are designed to stimulate the deep layers of the skin to produce collagen. The effects of this ultrasound treatment are cumulative, so several treatments, lasting between 30 and 90 minutes, are recommended. The true effects won’t be visible until several months have passed. Once again, younger candidates who are just starting to show signs of ageing will benefit most.

  1. Profound

‘Profound’ is a radio frequency micro-needling device. Its usage allows for creation of new collagen and elastin, which both assist in restoring the elasticity of skin.  The micro-needling delivers energy into the skin at regulated temperatures and at precise points. The process is based on scientific research that shows that controlled damage to the under layers of the skin promotes the growth of collagen. This can be done by using heat or cold. The treatment will require downtime, as there will be visible swelling and possibly even bruising, but this doesn’t normally last longer than a week.

  1. Thermage

Thermage works on radiofrequency (and is similar to Profound) and has had good results in smoothing and improving the quality of skin. The treatment results are very natural, and there is no downtime, or very little recovery time needed. In general, one treatment is considered sufficient, but the therapy would be customised to the individual’s needs.

The treatment works below the surface of the skin and claims to activate and remodel collagen. During the treatment, you would probably feel a vibrating sensation and this would be interspersed with cooling to provide comfort. Treatments are between 45 and 90 minutes and patients say that they can see results soon afterwards, although improvements can continue for up to 6 months.

  1. VelaShape III

This procedure is designed to tighten skin and eliminate fat. The technology uses several methods – infrared light, bi-polar radiofrequency energy, and vacuum. The treatment heats the fat cells and the surrounding connective tissue. The heating and vacuum stimulate new collagen and elastin, which results in improved skin texture. A normal treatment lasts for 15 minutes and there might be a little pinching during the suctioning. The results should be seen after a month, but could continue to improve for up to 6 months. Additional treatments are recommended to achieve better results.

What often happens with some of these treatments is that a combination is used to get best results. For example, the ATX 101 injections can be used in conjunction with the Coolsculpting Mini. The good news is that there has never been such a wide variety of non-invasive treatments to address the problem of a double chin, so consult with a cosmetic surgeon today to discuss the pros and cons of each procedure.
